LEATHER CORD
  • 1.5mm diameter, not 2mm.

  • For rustic look, use natural finishing cord.
Tips On How To Make Chan Luu Women's Bracelets

  • For durability, avoid using natural cord as it will soften faster than metallic or glossy finishing cord.

  • 7 feet length is enough for 5 wrap bracelet with 4 knots at the end. *based on 4mm bead max.*
  • 3 feet length is enough for single wrap bracelet with 4 knots at the end. *based on 4mm bead max.*
  • Make your bracelet(s) with supple leather cord(s) as it will be easier to knot and the leather cord surface is less likely to tear.

THREAD
  • Silk sewing thread, not silk thread for pearl knotting.

  • Silk thread has a softer sheen, whereas polyester and cotton have a "glossier" look.

    • Silk thread is slightly thicker than polyester, with cotton being the thinnest.
    • Cotton frays the most, with polyester being the neatest/ clean looking.
    • Some bracelet styles use 4 threads, some 6.
    • If the 4/ 6 threads don't wrap around the leather cord neatly, part the leather cord to loosen the silk thread and enlarge the loop with the big eye needle as it is more blunt, thus, less likely to damage the cord or threads.

    • Always try to neaten the threads as you go, to minimise untidy threads wrapping around the cord.

    • Turning the bead in the correct direction can sometimes, neaten the threads too.
    • Always factor in more thread length than needed.

    BEADS
    • Use faceted beads for more glitz and glam.
Tips On How To Make Chan Luu Women's Bracelets

    • Create a "test kit" with a spare 2.125" big eye needles and 8 threads to check the bead's hole before making the actual bracelet. Bead's hole should not be too tight as it might cut the silk threads.

    • Bead reamer sure comes in handy.

    • Never force the needle through the bead. Chances are, the threads will snap!
    • For 5 wrap bracelet, use beads that are no bigger than 4mm each, unless graduated.

    MISC.
    • Single wrap can be easily completed between 1-2 hours.
    • 5 wrap can take about 4-8 hours to complete.
    • Tension is an important factor to creating a straight bracelet.

    • Clipboard is really helpful, it provides tension while threading the beads onto the leather cord.

    • Always thread in a figure-8 method so that each bead sits nicely between the cords.

    1. Thank you so much Karen for sharing this...it is so informative. Do you use glue on your leather to help the knots stay?

      1. Thanks Diane for the compliment ^^ Glad the information is helpful. So far I've not used glue on the knots. I try to use leather cords that are supple as I've experienced some that were stiff and made knotting difficult. Below is a link on how to pick leather cord that is easy to knot. Hope you'll find it helpful. =)
