Ever wonder why your lovely pearl necklace or bracelet seems to loosen over time? That's because the silk thread that's used might not have been stretched before stringing the pearls. And how can you effectively remove all those unsightly kinks to have that silky smooth thread to complement your beautiful pearls?
Well in this tutorial, I'll show how to stretch and remove kinks from your silk thread, in 4 simple and easy steps.
MATERIALS NEEDED
- 2 clothes hangers
- some water
STEP 1
Wet your silk thread in a bowl of water or under a running tap, making sure the entire silk thread is thoroughly wet. Then squeeze out the excess water.
STEP 2
Tie one end of the silk thread to a clothes hanger, which will act as the hook. Repeat this step to the other end with the 2nd clothes hanger, which will act as the weight. Note that some of the silk thread from both ends will not be stretched as they are secured to the clothes hangers. So factor in some excess silk thread to your required length.
STEP 3
Hang one of the clothes hanger (the hook) on the top of a door. As the stretching process can lengthen the silk thread by quite a bit, do make sure to leave a gap between the dangling end (the weight) and the floor. The 2nd clothes hanger (the weight) will help to stretch the silk thread while it dries. Therefore, have enough space so that your silk thread can fully stretch and remove all kinks without the 2nd clothes hanger touching the floor.
STEP 4
Snip off the portion where the ends of your silk thread are secured to the clothes hangers.
And there you have it! 4 easy steps to prep your silk thread. Now you'll have your silky smooth thread, all ready to string those precious pearls!
